Growing for the future. Oysters are an incredible food resource and a benefit to the environment. At Hog Island we believe in growing oysters for future generations to come. That's why, beyond our day-to-day activities, we are investing in sustainable farming and business practices; working with leading scientists to measure and understand the impacts of changing ocean conditions; and collaborating to help grow a shellfish industry that is sustainable for our coastlines, our communities and our futures.
We do our best to work with our environment, for our environment. Hog Island were one of the first certified “Sustainable Shellfish Producers” by the Food Alliance, and we continue to examine our farming practices and work in collaboration with the wider community to ensure that we are treading lightly on this precious planet of ours.
Growing a sustainable shellfish industry, together. California has an enormous opportunity to create living-wage jobs, improve water quality, and restore marine ecosystem functions through the expansion of responsible shellfish farming and habitat restoration. The California Shellfish Initiative brings together interested parties who are working collaboratively to grow a shellfish industry that is sustainable for our coastlines, our communities and our futures.
A growing problem on a global scale. The oceans are becoming more acidic as a result of mankind’s actions. We are working in partnership with UC Davis Bodega Marine Lab to gather data that will help us to further understand the changes taking place in our oceans and inform state policy.
